Participants in the NSO Summer Music Institute play an evening of chamber music in large string and wind ensembles.

Characterized by beautiful sculpture, exquisite performance, and colorful music, Chengdu Puppets sing, dance, and even perform acrobatics. The performance showcases a variety of genres from the region, including shadow puppetry and marionettes.

Performing original music by San Francisco-based composer George Hurd, The Hurd Ensemble, selected by Kennedy Center Composer-in-Residence Mason Bates, unifies the worlds of electronic and classical music. All the music is written for string quartet (violin, viola, cello, upright bass), piano, and electronics, meticulously bound together with digitally arranged sounds collected from Hurd’s travels.

Hailing from Goundam near Timbuktu, Mamadou Kelly is backed by veteran sidemen collectively known as Ban Kai Na—“Hama” Sankare on calabash, “Youro” Cisse on djourkel (a monochord mandolin), Ibrahim Nabo on rhythm guitar, and Baba Traore on bass. The band cooks refined rhythms into profound simplicity.

Combining Kailash Kher’s strong traditional folk sensibilities and lyrics invoking Sufi mysticism with Naresh and Paresh Kamath’s more modern rock, electronic, and funk influences, Kailasa has proved to be a big hit with audiences in India and around the world.
